Marine
Science Summer Camp 2006
This camp is open to members and non-members of the Club. The main objective of this summer camp is to have fun and the second is to learn about the mangrove ecosystem of the RJYC. Information is offered on the types of mangroves and marine life associated with them. Experts teach campers about environmental issues and the formation of Palisadoes. The JUTA bus takes them all to the ocean side of Palisadoes to experience the stinging sand and crashing waves while collecting interesting rocks. On the final day there will be a fascinating tour by boat of Refuge Cay, Goodbody Channel and then a hike through the mangroves. There is the chance for campers to learn to row a dinghy and operate a small outboard engine. They can also sail on a 15-foot racing dinghy with an experienced sailor. Between organized activities the campers swim in the Club pool. The cost for attending this 5-day camp is $8,000. This includes the transportation from Sovereign Centre and return daily, as well as lunch and a snack. Children should bring a large scrap book, pencil, towel, swim suit, sneakers and wear shorts and loose fitting shirts. Life jackets must be worn on the boats; bring one if you have. Drinks and additional snacks are on sale at the Club. The camps will have between 12 and 20 campers and 4 camp leaders. Camp leaders are young adults with various interests and expertise but all have First Aid and CPR certification. Expertise has been promised by UWI Port Royal Marine Lab, Jamaica Environmental Trust, Brigette McDonald Levy (geologist). The boats are loaned by RJYC members. Potential
sponsors, we are still seeking support to help provide camp T-shirts and
cover some costs. If interested, please contact the RJYC. |
