- Ocean Conservancy - International Coastal Cleanup Day
- Date Published: September 19, 2012
Our sincere "Big Up" and "Thank You" to all the volunteers for the RJYC’s inaugural assistance in Ocean Conservancy - International Coastal Cleanup Day . The RJYC could not have done it without you!
Our RJYC co-sponsors – Restaurants of Jamaica (KFC), Peak Bottling (Catherine’s Peak), Rituals Coffee House, Mayberry Inv, BL Williams, Lillan Ltd, DM Equipment, Omni Industries and Therapy Plus for their kind assistance . Also of mention are the vessels – Contagious, Integrity, Odyssey, Motivation, Razzmatazz, Megabyte and Sea Hawk.
The event started at around 6am with a radio broadcast on Power 106 with Dervan Malcolm interviewing our Commodore. This was quickly followed by the RJYC Event Co-ordinator, the 2nd Rear Commodore. Both Officers spoke about the Club’s role together with JETS and NEPA who organized the event. While the interviews were being conducted, the setup and registration process slowly begun, suddenly someone realized that we needed to brew the Coffee as persons around the quarterdeck looked like half awaken zombies.
In true Jamaican style time ran ahead of us, but the minor delays did nothing but provide Dervan with additional persons to interview such as the event’s youngest diver, 12 year old Ethan Thwaites.
Similar to a military exercise the briefing was completed and the orders given. From that moment onwards it was no turning back. The event will be forever remembered for a good cause as 20+ divers submerged on the west side of the Cays and returned with bag after bag of trash.
We should not have to constantly remind users of the Cays not to dispose of their garbage on the Cay or in the Water surrounding the Cays. We must all do our part to create clean beaches for everyone to enjoy. Cleaner beaches contribute to abundant marine wildlife and a healthier Caribbean Sea for those whose lives depend on it.
It’s going to take all of us to be our brother’s keeper to ensure no trash is left behind, together we can make it happen.
Sincerely,
House & Social
